People are Like a Box of Chocolates

The tragedy of it is that nobody sees the look of desperation on my face. Thousands and thousands of us, and we're passing one another without a look of recognition. ~Henry Miller

Have you ever received one of those boxes of chocolates that has an assortment of candies and you are not sure what filling is in any of them. So you stare in the box like one of them is going to stand up and yell “pick me.” They make them so pretty with swirls or embossed or maybe even some sort of decoration on top.

So you ponder over which one to choose. Should I take the really pretty one with a flower on top made out of icing or the really plain one that just has a chocolate swirl on top. But then you hesitate because what if it is one of those with the really weird filling that you would never dream of eating. So you pick one up and study it, then you decide to try it. Then that grimace comes across your face as you realize that you have selected the most beautiful one in the box thinking it would be really good, and it turns out it is the one kind of filling you truly hate.

Then there are those who won’t take a chance on any one candy until they see what’s there. So they poke a hole in the bottom to see if it’s filled with something they don’t like and then they put it back in the box. I’ve never done that but I know it happens.

We are kind of like that too. We are all created so very different by a God who created the very universe. We choose someone out of the box and then we realize that they are human just like us and make mistakes so we decide to put them back in the box and try a different one. The problem is everyone in the box has flaws. There’s the one with the coconut filling that you hate or the other one with the fruit filling that you wished was caramel. Or the one with the nut in the middle and you're allergic to nuts.

Prayer for the Day: Heavenly Father, I thank You for the differences in the people around me. You created each of us in your likeness. Please help each of us to see and accept the differences in each other. I pray that you will help me to appreciate and love others as Your special creations.

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of first fruits of all he created. James 1:17-18
