Secrets

The Lord made it very plain in the New Testament that believers cannot escape reaping the kind of harvest they sow. We cannot hide our sin; we will not get away with it. The secrets of the night are not hidden from God.  Theodore Epp

Do you have secrets? I believe we all do.  Sometimes these are the things we have done that we don’t want anyone else to know.  The problem with secrets is they can often keep us from getting closer to God.

The irony of this is that God already knows what our secrets are and we don’t have to tell him about them.  He knows.  When we keep secrets we isolate ourselves from God and others.  We can’t form loving relationships with others when our secrets are standing in the way.  We think we are protecting ourselves but in reality we are hindering our growth.

There used to be a commercial about how if you ate Wheaties you would grow to be strong and could accomplish great things.  Then they would throw a famous athlete on the cover of the box to encourage you to buy Wheaties because then you could become or look like the person on the box.  The reality is we don’t get our strength from Wheaties.  We get that from God.

If we want to be strong in our faith it is necessary to let go of our secrets.  Secrets that are harmful and hidden create guilt.  Guilt draws us away from the people and the One we most need in our life.

When we trust someone else with our secrets, we begin to heal.  What we also find out is that the person we trust our secrets to sometimes has bigger secrets or the same secrets we do.  When we confess our sins or secrets to God we are forgiven.  When we confess our secrets to those who love us, we start to heal the brokenness inside us.

Prayer for the Day: Heavenly Father, I am guilty of having secrets.  If I don’t confess the secrets to You and repent I am not forgiven.  I need relationships with others and I need to reveal the secrets that hinder me from a close relationship with You.  Help me to be wise in who I choose to share those secrets with and to always come to You and confess them.  When I reveal You heal.

Scripture:  Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Galatians 6:7-8

Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.  James 5:16
