Laughter

Mirth is God's medicine. Everybody ought to bathe in it. ~Henry Ward Beecher

I find that the older I get the more I do things that I find humorous.  The thing is it is not because I am such a funny person or great comedian, but because I just do stupid stuff rather well.

When I was younger I laughed a lot but not so much at myself.  More often than not I was embarrassed by something I did and didn't want to draw attention to myself.  The older I get the more I find humor in the very things that used to embarrass me.

My husband has a great sense of humor and he keeps me laughing all the time.  He has this extraordinary way of seeing things in such a different way that the humor just bubbles to the surface.

I firmly believe that laughter is the best medicine.  After cancer I discovered that I didn't take myself so seriously.  When you are bald and have no eyelashes, it kind of puts everything into perspective.  Also when you look at your life from that side, you realize how the things that we often worry about are not important in comparison to death.

So I have learned to live one day at a time, laugh out loud when the mood strikes me, watch puppies because they have the ability to make you laugh uncontrollably, and if you ever get children and puppies together you will learn the true joy of laughter.  The only way we will learn to have joy in our hearts is to let laughter reside there as well.

Prayer for the Day: Father, I know you gave us humor and laughter so that we may find joy here on earth.  If we can see the humor in our trials, we will begin to reflect You to a fallen world.  Thank You for refining my sense of humor so that I can laugh at myself and show others You through that laughter.

Scripture:   When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dreamed. Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy.  Then it was said among the nations,“The Lord has done great things for them.” The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.  Restore our fortunes, Lord, like streams in the Negev. Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy.  Those who go out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with them.  Psalm 126: 1-6
